Asher Finds His Home

Asher (originally Manchas), came to Project POOCH in late August. He had been the victim of a vicious dog attack and had been nursed back to health by a wonderful individual in Mexico. Once he was healthy enough for travel, she helped him on his way, and via planes, trains, and automobiles, he made his way to Project POOCH.

When he arrived, he was very sedate. His face and arms bore permanent scars from his attack. He was still limping because he had apparently dislocated one of his toenails and when he arrived and started walking around on our front yard, which is small rocks, it irritated it. We learned he had resource-guarding tendencies around food with other dogs, likely due to his time as a street dog.

The youth were patient with him. They learned how to work with his special needs and helped him come out of his shell. They built trust with him, and learned that when he trusted people one of his most favorite things was belly rubs.

We learned that Asher was going to need a special adopter. He needed to be the only animal in the home, and he needed a calm home. This special boy needed a person or family willing to continue to work through his reactivity with other dogs and set him up for success.

And boy, did he find the most perfect family. They traveled more than two and a half hours to meet Asher because they felt such a pull to him through his website profile. He took an almost instant liking to them and seemed to feel that they were his people.

He's been in the home for almost two weeks, and his family is seeing his personality emerge. They have reported that he LOVES toys and carries them everywhere he goes. They renamed him Asher because it means "happy one" in Hebrew, and they want him to have a happy life from here on out.

When I was talking with his mom yesterday, she said that when she first met Asher, she cared for him, but now she truly loves him, and they can't imagine their lives without him.

Welcome home, Asher! You are going to have the best life ever!
